Mentioned for the first time as a "praetorium" (i.e. an official residence) in a document from 1109. The archbishops of Mainz, then territorial princes, used to have their juridical court sessions in this Romanesque building. It is regarded as the oldest existing office building in Germany. Since 1274 it is Fritzlar’s town hall. Destroyed by fire around 1435, it was reconstructed in a Gothic half-timbered style with three pointed towers on the south façade, completed in 1441. In 1839 its half-timbered storeys were taken down. In 1963/64 the building was restored to its original prospects on the basis of drawings and it became extended. In 2009 followed the reconstruction of the three pointed towers on the south side.
